WAITANGI GRAFFITI PAGE

They thought a treaty would be bad for the Maori and they advised against signing it. But Two important chiefs Hone Hoke pokai and tamati waka nene said the treaty was a good thing because it would stop inter tribal warfare. They also believed it would make trade between Maori and pakeha easier and fairer.

Maori first came to New Zealand between 1250 and 1300. For around five hundred years they had aotearoa to themselves. Then, in 1769 captain cook came and put the country on the world map.

By the late 1830s around two thousand Europeans most of them wanted to come here to start new lives and pressure was building on their government to bring law and order and some Maori agreed.

At the time Britain was a powerful country that ruled over an empire. It decided that New Zealand should become part of the British Empire too.
